The story behind the Fourth of July national Holiday is an interesting historical journey into our national pastime. Initially, July 4th, 1776 was not the day that the continental Congress decided to declare independence- that day was actually on July 2nd, 1776. Neither was it the day we started the American Revolution – that was in April 1775. It was also not the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence. That was in June 1776.
So, what happened on July 4th, 1776?
That was the day on which the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence after all edits and changes were finalized after the draft was submitted two days earlier for review. Initially, the day was not observed with much reverence and in fact in the first twenty years it was a source of conflict between the Democratic Republic and the Federalists. Almost one hundred years later in the 1870 Congress, July 4th was finally declared a National Holiday.
Today, we celebrate this day as great American Holiday recognizing our independence as a nation. We stand proud as a nation among other nations, a guiding everlasting beacon of inspiration to the rest of the world. It is a day to cast politics aside and unite as one and reflect on how far we have come as a nation – and how much further we can go.
